iPhone 12 Pro and Max to launch with mmWave 5G Technology and iPhone 12 Sub-6GHz 5G

The iPhone 12 series has been in the news for quite some time, and it's speculated that Apple will be launching phones later this year. However, as we are still waiting for confirmation of the phones from the Cupertino-based company, several reports have indicated that the new iPhone series will pack A14 Bionic SoC along with 5 G connectivity. Now, a notable tipster has argued that the rumored 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 variants are likely to support only sub-6GHz 5 G connectivity. It was also added that the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone Pro Max will support both sub-6GHz 5 G and mmWave 5 G technologies.

The new reports have been outlined by the prominent tipster and tech expert Jon Prosser, who last week also referred to the supposed prices of the four purported iPhone 12 models. Prosser suggested that because the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 version will not utilize the high-end mmWave 5 G equipment, having the handset cost just $50 (Rs. 3.790) more than the iPhone 11 for the same screen size.

To place this in context, there are only two forms of 5 G technologies that are commonly used. This are the mmWave 5 G technology that delivers faster rates, whereas the competing sub-6GHz system is more widely used. Since 5 G technology has not yet arrived in India, consumers looking to buy the latest iPhone 12 will not be impacted.

However, as noted by Techradar, the popular U.S. network carrier Verizon uses mmWave 5 G technology, so the vanilla iPhone 12 will not work with this 5 G connectivity on that network. In the United Kingdom, for example, the report also states that no network carrier uses the mmWave 5 G technology and therefore will not affect customers planning to purchase the iPhone 12 vanilla. But since the rumored 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max support both sub-6GHz 5 G and mmWave 5 G technology, customer planning to purchase Pro variants will not face any problems in terms of 5 G connectivity.

As mentioned, Apple has yet to announce the launch of the iPhone 12, so all the specifics of the series listed above should be taken with a pinch of salt. Meanwhile, Prosser last week reported that the entry-level iPhone 12 is likely to be priced at $649 (roughly Rs. 49,100), whereas the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Limit is likely to be priced at $1,099 (roughly Rs. 83,200).
